The Magestic Coast

Our family just returned from an incredible time on the Oregon coast. This was our first time to explore the Pacific and we loved it. The scenery was extraordinary and it was exciting to get up close with various marine life along the shore and in tide pools. It all made me wonder at God's amazing imagination. He created all of it from nothing yet it is all perfect: the depth of color, the flowers, the waves, the wind, the tides. Everything we create is inspired by something that already exists. Can you imagine an artist creating a more perfect picture than this one I took just up the road from where we were staying?

And it all works together in perfect harmony. We took a tour at the OSU Marine Science Center while we were there. As we walked through the various parts of the estuary, the guide talked about changes people have made on the area that had unforseen and damaging consequences. It made me reflect on how perfect God's master plan is not only for the natural world but for our lives as well. How often do I get in His way when I try to take things into my hands?

I stand in awe of our God.

Different Quiz

If you've spent any time at all on Facebook, you've likely taken a quiz or two. Maybe it was the one to find out which Twilight character you are or the one that tells you your Indian name. So why not take this simple one.

Can you name:
  • The last 4 Academy Award winners for best actor & actress
  • The first 5 Presidents of the U.S. in order
  • The last 6 World Series winners
  • The first 4 astronauts to walk on the moon
  • 5 USA Olympic gold medalist

So how'd you do? You may have been able to think of a few but its unlikely that you could answer them all. The point is, no one really remembers the stars from yesterday. They were all the best of the best in their areas but we still don't recall them.
They had their time of fame but it didn't last. The applause fades. The trophies tarnish. And honors are buried with their owners. Here's another quiz. See if these answers come any easier.

Can you name:
  • 4 teachers who made a difference for you in school
  • 5 friends who have helped you in times of trouble
  • 6 people who have made you feel special
  • 4 people who have taught you something worthwhile
  • 5 people you enjoy spending time with
So was the second one any easier for you? That's because the people who make a difference in our lives are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones who care.

Appreciating Freedom

Yesterday, we celebrated America's independence day from the long ago tyranny of British monarchy. It was a day to relish our freedoms and enjoy time with friends and family. I am so very thankful to those who fought to give it to us and those who fight today to preserve it. We have come far from the overt despots of our past but we need to keep vigilant watch for that which would ensnare us with chains today.

We are on the verge of becoming a nation dependent on government. Studies show that is one of the final steps in the destruction and fall of a civilization. As Lincoln said, "America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." There may be time and circumstances where we all need help. Yet we need not become comfortable with the government giving us the fish to feed us. Instead we should strive to learn how to fish so that we can all feed ourselves.

As American's we enjoy fruits produced from the roots laid by our forefathers in the establishment of this great country. We are at a time where many want to continue to enjoy those fruits but cut them off from the Christian roots from which they grow. Our country was founded on Christian beliefs. Nearly, every man who signed the Declaration of Independence was a devout Christian. Without healthy roots the tree will cease to be.

Let us join together in praying for our country and for our leaders. For our leaders, may God give them His wisdom to lead and govern. For our country, may He turn our hearts to Him.
